Join the upcoming six-part Nutrient Management Planning Web Series, led by Dr. David Burton, running every Monday at 1 PM (AT) from April 13th to May 19th. This series is supported by the NB Soil & Crop Improvement Association, Perennia, the PEI Federation of Agriculture, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture. Funding for this project has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Agricultural Solutions (ACS) - On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF). Nutrient Management Planning Web Series with Dr. David Burton \u2013 Fill out form

This series will be comprised of six webinars addressing the following topics:

1. April 13 - Soil sampling and understanding basic soil properties relevant to nutrient management \u2013 To effectively manage nutrients you need to understand what the soil already can supply and the limitations to crop growth that the site presents. This webinar will consider the most effective methods for sampling soils and the use of that information to optimize nutrient management within the field.

2. April 20 - Importance of pH management \u2013 In Atlantic Canada one of the most important aspects of improving nutrient use efficiency is the management of soil pH. This webinar will discuss what soil pH is, how it is measured, how it impacts nutrient use efficiency, and how we can effectively manage soil pH.

3. April 27 - Nitrogen management \u2013 Nitrogen is one of the most important and most expensive fertilizers used in crop production. This webinar will examine methods for increasing nitrogen use efficiency and increasing profit from effective nitrogen use.

4. May 4 - Phosphorus management \u2013 The management of phosphorus is complicated by its behaviour in soil. This webinar will discuss how phosphorus reacts once added to soil and how fertilizer strategies can be used to increase the availability and efficiency of phosphorus use.

5. May 11 - Base cations \u2013 The low cation exchange capacity of many of the soils in New Brunswick makes the management of base cations like potassium, calcium, and magnesium more complicated. We will examine the role of organic matter management, pH management, and direct supplementation in maintaining base cation availability to the crop.

6. May 19 (Tues) - Manure and organic amendment management \u2013 Organic amendments such as manure represent an important opportunity to build soil organic matter and supply nutrients to the crop. It is critical that these amendments be managed and applied in a matter that is most effective in realizing those goals. This webinar will discuss the management of organic amendments and how their nutrient value should be considered in nutrient management. \t<\/span>\n\t... Hosted by New Brunswick Soil and Crop Improvement Association Inc. (NBSCIA), in partnership with Canadian Organic Growers (COG).

In this session, Kevin Elmy, PAg, will explore how farmers can successfully include cover crops in their rotations and why it is worth the effort. Benefits of cover cropping will be highlighted, including improved soil health, better weed management, and a more resilient farming system overall.

The session will also include key context-specific tips, such as choosing the right species to fit with common crops like corn (silage), barley, wheat, and potatoes. Planting timing and rotation strategies will be discussed to help support overall field performance and profits. Kevin will focus on principles rather than providing recipes. Each operation and field needs its own solution, which is why a systems approach is critical.

Kevin Elmy, PAg, is a former third-generation farmer who has transitioned to a full-time agricultural coach. Since 2009, Kevin has been implementing regenerative agriculture principles, including cover crops, long before they became widely discussed. By focusing on building healthy, biologically active soil, he and his family have improved fertility, reduced synthetic inputs, and maintained strong yields.

Today, Kevin draws on both personal experience and extensive research, Kevin now travels across Canada and the United States, and has also worked in Ukraine and Australia, educating producers on regenerative agriculture and cover cropping practices. He is the author of Cover Cropping in Western Canada and Not Just Dirt.

The New Brunswick Soil and Crop Improvement Association is hosting a five-part virtual learning series designed to support New Brunswick producers in exploring On-Farm Best Management Practices (BMPs) that improve soil health, productivity, and climate resilience. This series will focus on key BMPs supported through the On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF), with an emphasis on cover cropping and rotational grazing systems. Through interactive virtual sessions, producers will have the opportunity to learn from a variety of subject matter experts, deepen their understanding of how these practices function on the ground, and explore how BMPs can be adapted to their own farm contexts. Sessions are intended to be practical, accessible, and relevant for producers at different stages of adoption, offering both foundational knowledge and advanced perspectives.

\n\tOur AGM speaker Nick Green is a cattle producer and systems-focused operator based in Prince Edward Island. He runs Kingston View Farms, a low-input cow\u2013calf operation built around year-round grazing, AMP systems, practical fencing and water infrastructure. Nick also operates Kingston Farm Supply, supplying grazing and livestock handling infrastructure across Atlantic Canada.

His work focuses on reducing feed costs, labour, and overhead by integrating genetics, grazing management, infrastructure design, and simple record-keeping into one cohesive production system. Nick brings a practical, economic approach grounded in real on-farm experience.

Il dirige Kingston View Farms, une entreprise d'\u00e9levage de vaches et de veaux \u00e0 basse intensit\u00e9, fond\u00e9e sur le p\u00e2turage \u00e0 l'ann\u00e9e, les syst\u00e8mes AMP, les cl\u00f4tures pratiques et les infrastructures de distribution d'eau.
